Queen of the South v Dundee – match report

Dundee: Douglas, Irvine, Lockwood, Stewart, McKeown, Weston, Riley, Harkins, Dempsey (Trialist), Higgins, Forsyth.
After a few windy and wet days, it was a nice day for football this sat afternoon and 2006 supporters turned out to watch Queens first full home game in the league for nearly 3 months.
Queens started the game well and less than five min into game the crowd thought the ball was in after a Mcmenamin header but it hit the side netting. Dundee fired a free kick straight at Hutton before Johnstone shot straight at ex Scotland keeper Rab Douglas at the other end. Burns fired a shot over before McGuffie had a shot deflected just wide. McLaren then had a header that went just wide before disaster struck. Some good play by Riley down the right wing and sent a cross in for Forsyth who calmly placed a shot under Hutton. After the goal Dundee was the better team for 5 min but Queens took back the initiative but only created half chances.
Dundee went in at half time with a 1-0 lead but Queens was by far the better team, and we hoped for more success in front of goal in second half.
Queens dominated at the start of the second half and McGuffie had a shot just over the bar following a corner early on. Johnstone curled in a shot that was well saved by Douglas as it was heading for the top corner. Paul Burns then got booked for a nothing challenge, it looked like he won the ball from where I was sitting but the ref obviously disagreed. McMenamin took a lob shot but it went just over the bar. Then finally Queens equalised when they got a free kick just outside the box. McLaren sent the ball in and McGuffie got his head to it and put it past Douglas and into net, 1-1. Queen of the South continued to press for the winner and McMenamin had shot straight at Douglas from inside the box, had it gone to either side Douglas would have had no chance. Queens then had a penalty shout when a shot struck the hand of a Dundee player who was lying on the ground, but the referee disagreed with the crowd and players unfortunately. McMenamin then shot over after a lot of back and forwards inside the box.
Then completely against the run of play Higgins managed to volley on the turn and send the ball into the net past a helpless Hutton, 1-2. Dundee had a shot just wide shortly after. Queens pressed and pressed for the rest of the game but couldn’t manage to get the goal they needed. Weatherston came on towards the end but he was unable to make a difference. Queens dominated 80 minutes of this game but they were lacking skill and luck in the final third. But the performance was a good one and we will win many games if we can keep playing like that.
Next up is a home game against Partick Thistle sat 12th February and hopefully the spectators will turn up in numbers.
