Queen of the South v Forfar CIS cup 25-08-10 Result; 4:1 to Queens

On a nice wed evening only 981 supporters turned up to watch this 2nd round game in the Co-operative insurance cup.

Queens started with a 3-5-2 formation with Bob Harris playing in an unusual role on the left side of midfield.

Queens were the best team from the start and it only took 2 minutes for Harris to get through one on one with goalkeeper but he was off balance and shot went wide. A few minutes later Harris had another shot from edge of box but that went wide as well.

The breakthrough finally came 18 min into game and it was Willie McLaren who dribbled past a defender at edge of box before sending the ball under Forfar’s keeper for 1-0.

It only took Queens 5 more min to add a second, Alan Johnstone was fouled in the box and the ref pointed to the spot for a rather soft penalty. Bob Harris stepped up and put the ball in the corner to the left of keeper for 2-0.

It was nearly 3 a few min after when McLaren went past two defenders but his shot was saved well by the Forfar keeper. Forfar finally got their first shot on target on 37 min but shot was well saved by Queens keeper Lee Robinson.

Just before half time Forfar had a big penalty claim turned down, their players protesting and it ended up with to player booked and their manager told off. Looked like Queens were a bit lucky. Only min later queens had a penalty shout but that was turned down as well. Queens made a change as well with McGuffie coming off with what looked like a strain, replaced by Carmichael. That saw Bob Harris going back to defence and Carmichael playing on the wing.

Queens were the better team throughout the first half, passing the ball well and went in at half time 2-0 up.

Forfar started the Second half the better team but didn’t create many chances. Queens forced a couple of corners but nothing came off them. It took 15 min of second half for a proper chance and fell to Forfar who scored from a Templeman header. It was 2-1 and a bit of excitement back in the tie. It didn’t last for long as Weatherstone came on for Quinn and only 3 min later he scored Queens third goal of the night. After some nice play round the box Weatherstone scored with a well placed shot.

Queens made their final sub in the 72nd minute with Neil Scally replacing Alan Johnstone. Forfar used all 3 subs in space of 3 min to put pressure on Queens. But it was Queens who continued to dominate and had yet another penalty shout turned down in 75th min. Only 2 min later Daniel Carmichael sends a looping header over an helpless Forfar keeper to make it 4-1 Queens

Queens controlled the rest of the game and could have added more towards the end but both Weatherstone and Mclaren missed the target when one on one with keeper. And there was also a disallowed goal for Queens after a foul by Holmes.

Forfar had a late shot saved by Robinson as well before the ref blew the whistle for full time. Queens safely made it through to the 3rd round in the cup. Last season we played Rangers at this stage……..maybe Celtic this time??
