Scottish Government Spending Review – Dumfries & Galloway Council’s response

Council Leader. Ivor Hyslop, said today that the Scottish Government Spending Review left Dumfries and Galloway with tough times and tough choices ahead. He commented: “We will need some time to understand the details and Dumfries and Galloway Council will be getting that analysis in a report planned for 9 December. Clearly the message that local government provides vital front line services has got through. The relative protection of education funding and the creation of a £70 million change fund for Health and Social Care ties in with our top two local priorities of protecting vulnerable people and providing a good start for all our children. But make no mistake this is not good news, it is just less bad than it might have been.”
He continued: “Our planning assumption of a £51 million funding gap over the next three years still looks realistic. We will all need to pull together over the next few weeks if we are to focus on the priorities and protect key services and vulnerable people as we move to set our budget for 2011/12”.
