People in Wigtown Area are preparing to celebrate and recognise HM Armed Forces, past, present and future, as part of Britain’s Armed Forces Day on Saturday 30 June 2012

The flag raising ceremony will be held this year at the Castle Square, Stranraer, on Monday 25 June at 4pm. The flag will be raised by Private McCormack from Stranraer, who is currently serving with the Royal Scots Borderers, 1st Battalion the Royal Regiment of Scotland.

The flag lowering ceremony will take place on Monday 2 July at 4pm at the Castle Square, Stranraer. The flag will be lowered by Private McCormack.

The main event will take place on Saturday 30 June at Agnew Park Stranraer between 12 noon and 4.30pm. This event, organised through the Royal British Legion Scotland (Stranraer Branch), has a full programme, including musical performances, children’s entertainment and fun fair, food and craft stalls, and demonstrations from a range of organisations. Preceding this event, at 11.30am, there will be a parade through Stranraer town centre with the Lord Lieutenant of Wigtownshire, Mrs Terry Brewis, taking the salute at the Castle Square. The parade will dismiss at Agnew Park where the festival will start.

Councillor Roberta Tuckfield, Chairman of Wigtown Area Committee, said, “I’m delighted to see the local arrangements that are in place to recognise this year’s Armed Forces Day. I hope that all three events will be well supported by local people. I would like to thank all partners involved in helping to organise these important occasions.”
