St Michael’s Street flats – roof partially blown off

Nith Place, in Dumfries, was surrounded by the emergency services last night when part of the roof of the flats in St Michael’s Street was blown off by gale force winds which swept across the region.
Police in Dumfries can confirm that around 40 people were evacuated from around 20 flats in St Michael Street at about 19.00hrs on Thursday 3 February, due to the strong winds damaging the roof of the building.
No one was hurt in the incident and five people were re-housed in other property. The remaining majority of people who were evacuated are now residing with friends or family.
A spokesperson for Dumfries and Galloway Constabulary said: “We are extremely fortunate that no one was injured either from inside the building itself or any nearby passing pedestrians and motorists. Swift and professional work by police, fire and ambulance staff ensured everyone concerned was extracted and moved to a place of safety in a timely manner.”
Debris was thrown across the street and officials are surveying the scene this morning.
More rain and gales are forecast for later today, easing by the evening.
