Police are warning again about the dangers of giving out any personal banking details over the phone after a woman in Dumfries was targeted by a number of phone calls from a French sounding lady. The caller said that the woman had been overpaying Council Tax for the past 17 years and was due a refund. The caller was able to inform the woman which bank she was with and asked for details of her bank card.
The caller was also in possession of some of the numbers on the rear of the woman’s card, however asked for the final three numbers on the rear. The woman at that point realised that something was not right about the call and hung up after telling the caller that she would await written confirmation about the matter from the Council. The woman however received six further calls tying to progress the matter. Police again warn that no personal banking or other details should be given out over the telephone and that reputable banks and other agencies do not ask for such details in this way.
