Ewart Library Staff buy goats and bikes!

Since it started in 2001, the Ewart Library staff tuck shop has bought ten goats for a Rwandan village, three bicycles for midwives in Ethiopia, a dowry of two goats for an African orphan, immunisation of two third world children against the more common childhood diseases and four operations to restore the sight of blind children.
For the tenth anniversary of the tuckshop, the staff have munched their way to raising £600 to help out a hospital in Africa by purchasing a solar suitcase. In Africa, when power fails (as it often does) the hospital cannot care for patients. Surgery in the dark (or by the light of paraffin lamps) is not possible. The ingenious solar suitcase provides back-up electricity for a hospital LED lighting, access to medical records and a paging system to bring doctors to emergencies.
Regrettably there are no statistics on the number of chocolate tea-cakes and packets of crisps which have been eaten in the process!
