Successful ‘Save a life’ course held in Dumfries

Basic first aid was one of a number of training needs identified in a Home Scotland consultation with tenants and residents in the Newbridge Drive area of Dumfries.
As a result of partnership working between Home Scotland and our Council’s Community Wardens and Community Learning and Development service, a first aid course was provided at North West Resource Centre, Lincluden. This ‘Save a Life’ first aid course was open to the whole community around Newbridge Road, from ages 13-113. Some of the skills gained included an introduction to cardio pulmonary respiration (CPR), the recovery position, control of bleeds and bandaging, along with assessing dangers and prioritising casualties.
The evaluations showed that everyone enjoyed taking part and learning new skills with different generations of our community working well together. When asked ‘what was the best thing you learned tonight?’, 4 people answered ‘we have learned how to save a life’. Everyone received a ‘Save a Life’ Certificate from the Red Cross at the end of the evening’s training.
The regeneration steering group for Newbridge Drive appreciate the support they were given with this event by the Community Wardens. It is hoped that more events like this can be held in the future.
