World Book Night stories

Libraries throughout the region had something to celebrate on Saturday night as enthusiastic audiences attended events to mark World Book Night 2011. At all events everyone received free World Book Night titles.
A local poetry group had a short reading event in Kirkcudbright Library. At Dalbeattie Library there was a very successful book swap of people’s own favourite titles and readings.
The Ewart Library saw 200 people hear guest authors Rab Wilson, Vivien Jones and Giancarlo Rinaldi introduce their own favourite books from the World Book Night Shortlist and The Balliol Consort rounded off the evening with a performance of a work with words by bestselling novelist Alexander McCall-Smith.
Rab Wilson said, “It was an utter joy to have the chance to speak to a receptive and knowledgeable audience about why books are so great and why they matter so much. The warmth and enthusiasm that was in the room was almost palpable. This night epitomised all that is rich about our society and libraries are at the heart of that.”
Anne Rinaldi, Resources Coordinator said, “It was a real thrill for staff in all participating libraries to see the events so well attended. Feedback from attendees has been hugely positive and I know that many were inspired to read new authors and as books are always free to borrow at the library I hope to see everyone who came along returning to the library very soon.”
Councillor Graham Nicol, Chair of Resources Committee, said, “This was a dynamic and unprecedented celebration of adult books and reading and I am pleased our library service could take part.”
