Brave Hannah publishes, “I am going to hospital”

On 1st September at 4.30pm a unique book for children will be launched at the Midsteeple in Dumfries.

‘I am going to hospital’ is a children’s book written by Hannah Jack who is five years old. Hannah lives with her mother and brother in Annan, Dumfries and Galloway. She chose all the words and produced all the illustrations for the book, with the help of her grandmother Angela. Hannah wanted to ‘make a book so that children won’t be frightened of going to hospital’. Hannah has Biliary Atresia, a rare life threatening liver condition. This has meant that Hannah has a lot of experience of hospitals. She is a patient at her local hospital, Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary, Yorkhill Children’s Hospital, Glasgow and St James’s specialist liver unit in Leeds. The book refers to Dr Excellent who is one of her doctors. His real name is Dr Eccleston but as a younger child Hannah could not say his name but called him Dr Excellent – a highly appropriate title for him and one that is still used by Hannah and her family.

Dumfries and Galloway Arts is proud to have supported the publication of this book through its Literature Development programme. Carolyn Yates, the Literature Development Officer, says: “Hannah is the youngest author I have worked with and it has been a pleasure to help her and Angela create this book. Many children end up having to visit a hospital at some time or other and I am sure this book, designed to be read by and to children, will help ease the fears and concerns they might have.”

Hannah’s family hope that, as well as helping other children, the book will raise awareness about organ donation and children’s liver disease.
